Dublin in sunshine!

The last week, the weather here has been absolutely stunning and fab! I, for sure, am loving it- have played with Candy’s dog in the park, eaten icecream, worn no warm clothes out, bought a beach top for daily wear and just enjoyed it all…

You know the main reasons why I love Dublin in the sun though:

– People look happier- everyone is in a good mood
– People look hotter- yup, Sunshine said this earlier today and I totes agree- people make that extra effort
– People are warmer- everyone wants to share a good word with the other person etc
– The city looks prettier- I always think this city is pretty but in the sun, nothing beats it
– Pints in the Pav- no summer day is really truly fab without this!! For those of you who haven’t done it- trust me, you are missing out!!!!

A very warm me 🙂

New Vigour

Since I can’t travel for at least 6-7 months… moving to Dublin will count as my BIG adventure even though it’s partly back in my comfort zone!

Here’s to new vigour to my mind, could certainly use it 🙂

Sigh, I miss traveling… so wish I was packing for Cuba & Mexico right now. SIGH!

To let or not to let…

I have been toying with the idea of getting my own place in Dublin to rent… the reasons that motivate me are:

  • I don’t have to ask my friends, who are exceptionally good at putting me up
  • I don’t always meet people I can spend the night with and then I feel guilty waking someone at 2 am after a night out
  • I get my own space from Ryan

Or am I being ridiculous- I mean, I have friends who are ok with me using their house and if anyone living in my area did this, I would take it personally…

Throwing money down the drain or taking my life in my hand- which way should I go?! :s

I miss Dublin

Still at work so a very quick one because even though I am taking a trip to Dublin tomorrow, I am really missing being in the middle of the city, enjoying cake and coffee while taking in the atmosphere… sigh, I miss Dublin!

Yesterday, some 15 of my mates randomly just decided to meet for a few pints- imagine the texts I got. SNIFF!

And then, I really wish I could be in Dublin for this! We all know I love movies, I love open-air events and when it’s one of my favourites in one of the nicest parks in the city and I am not there, I know something’s wrong 😦

Darn- I love my job and love my life but I really miss Dublin! SIGH.

Since I’ve been late the past few weeks…

This time I thought I’d be really quick and get it in at the start of the week, so here go my top 3 of last week:

  • First full week of work since June 2008 completed- and I survived it, kicked ass at it and had a blast
  • Got used to the country life to some extent- ofcourse I miss Dublin- it’s home but moving away has it’s advantages and disadvantages and it’s good to start anew
  • Did not lose my temper at a certain girl I have  no time for, despite numerous occasions where she may have desreved it!

And I’m back!

So, the last few days have been very quiet for me- I just took the time to go underground, focus on myself, get some sleep, settle into living in the country (and nope, I am nowhere close), go on long hikes, read and basically love life.

However, in all that time, I have managed to gather up a couple of interesting links, read some cool stuff and still spend some time online- mostly reading, absorbing information and just having a good time… here’s the top 3 that caught my eye, err brain:

This is a post in a mix of Hindi and English, also called Hinglish, and about a topic I love- gender stereotypes! I agree with so much the author says, and used to agree with some of them she says when I was her age- is this a sign of growing old, conforming (shock horror) or just maturing?! (This question is a rhetoric and I really don’t want an answer primarily because I don’t think I can handle it!)

No surprises on this one now- anyone and everyone who knows me knows how I am always singing the praises of having good relationships- I mean, it has gotten me out of many a soup so it has its merits! After my first day at work (after a break of 27 months- ouch!), I am even more a fan of this- a girl who has pretty much been running the operations couldn’t handle me coming over her and the company recognising a fellow manager- all silly, she understands but thank God for me being able to reach out and empathise with her- all about the relationship. I wholeheartedly believe in ALL the relationships that surround us and that’s why I am such a fan of coffees…. with people.

While on the topic of relationships, this made me laugh alot! A dude is actually patenting his approach to hit on women- how cool, crazy or confident is that. Apparently (yeah, I still like the word- you should have dealt with it by now), the book is a very good insight for males into how females think- I wouldn’t know as I haven’t read the dude’s stuff nor can I give a male perspective on a book!

So well, that aside I also finished reading Terry Pratchett’s ‘The Fifth Elephant’- another of the Disc World series and for those who are uninformed, unaware and just ignorant, please go read Terry’s work NOW- he rocks! and he takes me to a fantasy world that is so clever and funny that I love immersing myself into it- go Terry!

And finally, my top 3 of last week would be:

  • Looooooong hikes- 3 in 8 days, pretty good going, me thinks!
  • Moving to the country- seriously, never thought it would happen- to me, Ireland meant Dublin as far as living was concerned… this is a MASSIVE move for me.
  • Healthy eating and sleeping- it has been good to have time for ME- yes, sleeping, eating, reading, cooking, sipping wine in the sun, drinking champagne on my garden- that’s been something I have missed.

And on that note, it’s late, I am tired and I hope to be more frequent but first week and all, so it may be the weekend before I reappear.

Till laters, toodles peeps!

I will miss you, Dublin

There is something to be said about sitting in the open, wearing my sunnies, enjoying a cup of coffee while looking out the canal…

Not the nicest pic but the best I can do when using a mobile phone!

I am going to miss Dublin- this is the city that has been my second home for so long-

  • I know the nooks and crannies of this place.
  • I know what Dubs like, what they mean when they say something, how they think.
  • I know where to get a good pint of Guinness, even if I don’t like any.
  • I know the good places for the different cuisines.
  • I know the different smells.
  • I know this city.
  • I know where to go when I want a really good cup of green tea.
  • I know which hairdresser can do my hair just the way I like it.
  • I know where I can kill a few hours whenever I feel the need to.
  • I know where to get the best ice-cream.
  • I know this city.
  • I will miss this city.

Am I really ready to be a ‘culchie’?! Am I ready to have a quiet life where things will need to be planned, a spontaneous cup of coffee, a spontaneous movie plan, a spontaneous anything is not really possible or will I just think it’s only an hour and carry on like I would if I were in Delhi…

Either which way, I know I will miss Dublin- the craic in O’Donoghues, the sales in Brown Thomas, the lunches in Romano’s, the movies in Cineworld, the walks in Dun Laoghaire, the teas in The Westbury and the smiles of those who love this city the way I do.

Pocketful of rainbows, heart full of love

So, living in the country where it rains constantly, rainbows become quite the regular occurrence but sometimes, one needs a pocketful of rainbows and this ad is all about that heart full of love!

And it makes my city look SO pretty!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Here’s a little bit about the making of it- great to see that in this world of technology, something’s are still done the old-fashioned, simple way!

Talking of simplicity, I am well-impressed by this non-Irish dude who works in Temple Bar- while all the Irish are trying to come up with these techie ideas and make their big buck, he has a simple ply board with the Irish flag, leprechauns and beer glasses and 3 holes for faces, clicks a pic for a fiver and since he’s printing about 400 pics a day, he is looking at about 10k for 5 day’s work- how cool is that?! Simple and effective- now, that’s what I call getting out there and just doing it.

While on the topic, my top 3 of the week:

  • Didn’t burst into tears at the last class night out last week- seriously proud of myself for that one!
  • Balance between work and college and life was amazing and I even managed a good amount of sleep.
  • I brought a smile on 20 faces at least when I gave them a card summing the experiences we shared together.

As an Indian in Ireland, I do stand out- even now. And as one of the party circuit, having a good one, not shy, enjoying my drink, laughing and being bold, I am usually always considered “exotic” and so getting chatted up int he bar is pretty much the norm for me, not being cheeky or smart or anything.

However this was a new one: “Wow! Are those breasts homegrown?”

I mean, he was cute and all, if jock is your look but really thick and I judge people by who they are with and I didn’t like the look of them either and I know I am being superficial but a vibe is important ok?!

Anyhow, he didn’t get far using that on me- a smile and I continued on my way so not sure if it’s really effective… still, amusing.

And today is the Indian Independence Day, which means Facebook and Twitter will have ALOT of comments wishing one Happy Independence Day, people will have the Indian flag as their photos, they will talk about being free, kicking British a$$es, there will be many speeches and promises, many kites will be flown, but sadly come August 16- all will be forgotten 😦 Sigh.I’d make a promise to try and change all that but that’s pointless right because what happens today gets forgotten about tomorrow. Saying that, there must be something to India that despite all the corruption and negativity, there is a smile on our faces!

Some Amazing Advice

Over the last 2-3 days, I have been VERY lucky to have had some amazing conversations, met some really cool people and learnt some sound advice, especially on what to bear in mind when in a startup.

The 2 people whose advice I am capturing below are some amazing individuals:

  • BM: A venture capitalist specialising in technology startups. Best known for his/ his company’s involvement in eBay and Bebo and for missing out on Skype.
  • SM: A very out-there sort of a guy whose passion lies in connecting culture and businesses together. He now heads a non-for-profit organisation to bridge the gap between the 2 sides.

Both of them are amazing people and have some awesome ideas, thoughts and experiences, some of the key points are captured below:

  • Know when to replace the entrepreneur with a CEO
  • Have a clear exit strategy- i.e. go public or sell- have a timeline in place
  • Know your cash flow- on a daily basis
  • Have an amazing board that are not involved everyday
  • Let there be NO surprises
  • Have a strong understanding of the different stakeholders and create the organisational identity based on that
  • Collaborate, don’t compete
  • Constantly be aware of the changing landscape around you

On a completely unrelated note, I met up with TS last night and we have both agreed that the timing sucks for us- with him being out of the country so much, and me being out of the city as much and us being together so little but to continue spending time together and hanging out and seeing how it goes. I am absolutely delighted. The others are still on the scene and this party of 4 is certainly very interesting but I am having a great time… Either which way, I hope TS and I can overcome these obstacles because he is still leading my a long shot!

Enjoy the weekend folks- if you are in Ireland, do head towards Dun Laoghaire for the brilliant festival of food, music and good times! Maybe I’ll bump into you there- hopefully the weather will hold!

Heya all!

So I just had a few moments today to just sit back and reflect on so many things happening in my life and here’s my week so far- pretty charmed life, I lead eh?

On Monday, I got offered the role of a CEO of a SME in Ireland- now that’s pretty darn cool, in my opinion! And then I spent the rest of the evening with close friends just chuckling, smiling and having a good time 🙂

Tuesday was a quite day with alot of visits to the toilet and knowing I have a doctor mate who dropped by to check up on me, with a bottle of wine in tow, made me laugh! I mean seriously, doc, I haven’t even in 24 hours and you want to pop open some wine to celebrate? You went with non-bubbly ‘cos of my health- oh how nice of you! Thanks for the laugh doc 🙂 [Incase you are worried, it turned out to be 7up in the wine bottle and he was troubling me but hey, it was amusing]

I went for a tour in the Convention Centre Dublin on Wednesday and wow! What an amazing building- completely carbon neutral, a PPP that seems to be favoured towards the public while still making a profit for the private entity and 8000 capacity on the 5 floors! I am blown away with the way everything was so high-tech and all- maybe in the years to come, it wouldn’t remain so good… but for the moment, I can see a lot of potential to it. My biggest issue is the lack of connected hotel- when I go away for conferences and such, I tend to prefer staying in the same hotel than commuting… I know they are connected to Ritz Carlton in Powerscourt but that’s gonna be not easy!

And today, I was reminded of an old song I used to love- there was an Indipop version of it too but for the life of me, I cannot remember it- so if anyone could tell me where I can get either the French or the Indian version of the song, I would be very grateful- it’s a very soothing tune. I also learnt a random fact that there were over 2 billion videos viewed on YouTube yesterday- that’s some traffic!!!

Some interesting links I enjoyed reading today:

Big hips on women = potential memory loss!

China is STILL trying to control its people’s thoughts!

What a way to start what you’d hope to be a lasting relationship!!

Opening wine by using a shoe- certainly wouldn’t manage that in heels!

Indian Rupee has its own symbol now!

The potential of social media marketing (McKinsey Quarterly report)

Testing your decision making gut (McKinsey Quarterly report)

And when to trust that gut? (McKinsey Quarterly report)

And the BEST smile of the day- TS mailed me a reply to an email I sent him on Tuesday because he had promised to do so. He mailed me at 3 am because that’s when he finished work- now, how cute is that? You gotta adore someone as sweet as that 🙂 *Swooooooooooooooooooooon*

And you know what- we are only half way through the week- how cool is this?! Wahay, I love life!

Blessed! VERY blessed :)

I am so blessed to have the friends I do in my life. And right now, I feel exceptionally blessed and just wanted to share this feeling.

Went for dinner last night with a lovely guy- beautiful meal, delicious wine (wow!), great dessert, fabulous company and many, many, many laughs. And he has such a cute smile too so it’s all good 😉

Woke up with a massive smile today to hear my mother gush on and on and on about a fruit basket I sent her way- thought it would be nicer than cake for the birthday- healthier, at the very least!! Love the fact that a simple gesture like that can bring such a huge smile to her face.

Tried going back to sleep after getting home (yeah, I scored the friend I fancy- he is still green as are 2 others so the fight is hotting up eh? 😉 I am enjoying this flirting, to be honest!), but got a text off my bestfriend, Dr.F telling us one of our partners in crime is over for the weekend and we are reconvening at our usual spot- I have missed my weekly munches with the boys so much and this news has just tipped me over so much- I love it. I look forward to my melon, the amazingly delicious pizza and may even go for the sticky toffee pudding because well, it is delicious! Ah Romano’s, thank you for the lovely Saturdays. I am delighted the friendship of this set of people has stood the test of time, travel, locations, hardships and I am so so so looking forward to this. But it also means, I can’t sleep now- I am too excited!

And if that wasn’t all, a friend just suggested going to Shrek- what better way to spend a Saturday?

Oh, I am loving life immensely and I feel exceptionally blessed. Thank you world for being so good to me.

P.S. This made me chuckle ALOT!

I think no one (bar Scrooge, maybe and even he changed his thinking eventually) would say that friends are unimportant. I, for one, completely believe that. I have a lot of acquaintances but they are not as important to me as my core set of friends are- whatever part of the world they are in. And they know who they are.

However, I always thought it was more for a personal reason I needed my friends. Being a ‘F’ in Myers Briggs style (ENFP, for those of you who care), I make friends everywhere- in a bus, in an office, in a pub, in a class, in anything. I talk to everything- including walls (yeah, ofcourse I am eccentric, didn’t ya know?). But this article here makes me think that even if I am doing it just because that’s an innate part of who I am, there is actually scientifically reasoning behind it too.

And so, being Friday night and all, I am off to meet a friend I fancy (yup, he’s on the list- the cute engineer) for dinner in this apparently amazing restaurant on Dawson Street – Marco Pierre White.

P.S. How do I fake I am hungry when I only just ate tonnes of carrots, cucumber and hummus for lunch?!

“No one can starve in India”

This comment deserves a post in itself in my opinion!

How this ain’t the most ironic comment ever is beyond me… considering India has some approx. a third of the poorest people in the world and about 40% are below the international poverty line, and those are the official facts- we all know the reality is worse.

In fairness, the context was as a guest visiting an Indian family- the Indians are worse than the Irish when it comes to hosting- they ply so much food into the guest that one can’t move. Not that it’s a bad thing usually…

So combine this discussion with giggles about snuggie-sutra, I have had my share of amused moments and its only 5 hours since I got out of bed… can’t wait to see what lies ahead.

Less than 12 hours…

… and I am already sleepy again!

Wow- if this is me after a few days of hard work at a project, what would I do if and when I ever became a mother?! I am wrecked, shattered, tired already.

Though- went for a gorgeous meal in the Westbury hotel (I highly recommend the Wilde restaurant- bar the lady at the doors there- someone teach her what service is meant to be please!) and to the cinema to see ‘Get him to the Greek‘- loved it! Russell Brand is so funny.

So my day can pretty much be summed up as:

Wake up, stretches, shower etc, breakfast (at 4 but since it was cereal and my first meal, it counts as brekkie), dinner at Westbury, cinema, internet and lots of SLEEP!

C’est la vie!

So, since the weather was not great, a mate and I went for some ice-cream… (there’s a new place on Wicklow Street called Murphy’s where Haagendasz used to be)- interesting idea of giving half scoops- so you could pay for 2 scoops and have a combination of upto 4 flavours in the cup- how cool is that? Worth trying the Seasalt icecream- really different!

Anyway, so weather got better (.i.e. dry) but guess what? The boy had to cancel and so the joys of being a student and doing a masters mean I am sitting in my living room on a Friday evening trying to motivate myself to write the SWOT of a financial services company I have been analysing… fun, fun, fun- NOT!

Hope you’re having a better Friday!

P.S. Thank you Weather Gods! 🙂

Please please please weather gods…

So I am currently living it up in Dublin and the weather has been absolutely stunning the past while… and so here I am, in my shorts and flip-flops totally unprepared for the rain.

But living on the emerald isle, one can get used to that and so the change of weather doesn’t upset me as it upsets my plans. There are these lads who are doing their best to revive the Fitzwilliam Square(http://www.dublinks.com/maps/Fitzwilliam-Square) by hosting a myriad of different events- Charlie Chaplin movies on Sundays to Shakespeare in the Park currently.

And so, bold me decided to meet this guy I have been flirting with (and yay, it’s been a 2 way street so far) for this play, with a bottle of red, a picnic basket (he is a chef so I may as well enjoy the goodies, right?) and a beach towel (I don’t own a picnic blanket- crazy or what!!!) but this rain has been such a bummer. Why oh why, did it have to rain all of a sudden and make the weather so horribly humid now?!

So please, please, please, please, please Weather Gods, you have been so very good to Dublin this summer, bring the sun out again…. please? now? … now! NOW! Or maybe even 5 seconds ago….
